Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for life on Earth. Today, the world mainly runs on fossil fuels. At Ørsted, our vision is to create a world that runs entirely on green energy. We want to revolutionise the way we power people by developing green, independent, and economically viable energy systems. By doing so, we create value for the societies that we’re a part of and for all our stakeholders.
We transformed from a fossil fuel company to a global green energy leader in a decade
Today, we’re a global leader in offshore wind with a 25 % market share. But we used to be a fossil fuel company.
In 2008, we did a complete rethink of our business strategy. We began to increase our investments in offshore wind farms and to convert our power stations from coal to sustainable biomass. In 2017, we divested our oil and gas business. Our one remaining coal-fired power plant was shut down in 2024.
We now develop, construct, and operate:
- offshore and onshore wind farms,
- solar centres,
- energy storage facilities,
- renewable hydrogen and green fuels facilities,
- and bioenergy plants.
We target an installed renewable capacity1 around 27 GW by the end of 2027.
By 2025, we aim to reduce carbon emissions from our energy generation and operations (Scopes 1-2) by at least 98 % compared with 2006.
________
1 Installed Capacity for the group means renewable capacity accumulated over time for which commercial operation date (COD) has been achieved, and where the group has or has had an ownership share and an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) role in the project, disregarding whether such capacity has subsequently been di-vested, in full or in part. Notwithstanding the foregoing conditions are not fulfilled, renewable capacities from acquisitions are also added to the installed capacity.

From the first offshore wind farm to the largest
We’re headquartered in Denmark, and our shares are listed on Nasdaq Copenhagen (Orsted).
Our story began in Denmark, where we built the world’s first offshore wind farm in 1991, but today we operate across Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. We’ve broken our own record for the world’s largest offshore wind farm several times over.
We employ approx. 8000 people who collaborate with our partners to revolutionise the way we power people through innovative energy solutions and real action.
We're committed to working with countries to accelerate the development of green energy and speed up decarbonisation.
About our name
We’ve taken our name after Hans Christian Ørsted, one of Denmark’s best-known scientists and innovators. Through his curiosity, dedication, and interest in nature, he discovered electromagnetism in 1820, helping to lay the scientific foundation for how power is generated today.
